Tango Bourges Basket

When Humanity Became Strategy

January 2026 · Three-day BANTU Sport Leadership residency

The Context

Tango Bourges Basket is a storied European club with a legacy of French championships. At the start of the season, however, the team had a newly assembled international roster still discovering its collective identity. Head coach Olivier Lafargue recognized a critical truth: talent alone is not enough when pressure rises. He chose to invest in the team’s human architecture.

The Mandate: Human Before Player

I was not brought in to fix tactics or lead a standard team-building session. My mandate was to address what elite sport often skips: creating space for people to slow down and truly see one another. Across three short intervention windows during a demanding EuroLeague week, I combined observation, embodied relational exercises, LEGO® Serious Play®, dialogue, and ritual. The aim was to help create the conditions in which a newly assembled group could begin to experience itself as a team.

Three days. Three human questions.

Day 1 — HOME:

Who are you beyond basketball? Arriving together before performing together.

Day 2 — COMMUNITY:

Who are we becoming together? Exploring collective identity, strengths, and responsibility.

Day 3 — GIFT:

What can each person bring to the whole? Anchoring the team’s shared identity through ritual.

What the Match Revealed

The match against Schio offered one moment in which the team’s developing collective identity became visible on the court. Facing a 15-point deficit, the players remained connected. Olivier’s message—“On accélère ensemble”—gave language to what the team was seeking to embody:

"For the first time in a long time, I felt we were entering the court together." — Kariata Diaby

The Season That Followed

The Schio match was one moment within a much longer season. In the months that followed, Bourges advanced through the French playoffs and reached the national championship final for the first time in four years. After winning Game 1 of the final, Laëtitia Guapo reflected on how the group had remained united through a demanding season:

"We are a group of friends who play basketball together. In thirteen years of my career, it is the first time I have played with my friends."

Her words did not attribute the team’s journey to one intervention. They did, however, reveal how the players themselves had come to describe the group: through friendship, shared adversity, and the experience of remaining together. That journey was shaped by the players, coaches, staff, and the work of an entire season. The residency was one part of that wider process. The season gave broader context to the question at the heart of the work: what becomes possible when a newly assembled group begins to experience itself as a team?

Why This Work Matters

The residency created deliberate space for trust, identity, and shared responsibility—three foundations of team cohesion. It reinforced a simple truth:

Human connection is not separate from elite performance. It is part of the architecture that sustains it.
